After a full-time freelance performing career with most of the UK’s leading orchestras, and arranging music for many ensembles including the LPO, the Scarborough Spa Orchestra and my own quartet, I am now concentrating on teaching music theory for ABRCM Grades 1 – 8.
Biography :
Paul Appleyard was born in Dewsbury in January 1951. His schooling took place at Oldershaw Grammar School (1962 – 1968). He studied Law at King’s College London from 1968, graduating (LLB) in 1971, subsequently studying Viola with Frederick Riddle at the Royal College of Music as a postgraduate until 1973

Member of Status Cymbal string quartet and remains principal viola in the Sinfonietta Tedesca Karlsruhe for occasional German tours.
Miscellaneous
Solo experience includes performances of Hindemith’s ‘Trauermusik’ and Mozart’s ‘Sinfonia Concertante’ with the London Schubert Orchestra. Whilst working for the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, Paul was commissioned to produce arrangements for the orchestra and its associated string quartet, which he continues to manage, arrange for and play in. The quartet is now called Status Cymbal and is the resident quartet for a number of cruise lines as well as giving concerts throughout the UK.
